A guy will spend a three-year prison sentence for stealing a pair of shoes and a cell phone from a friend who was housing him in Kibera, Nairobi.
After pleading guilty to accusations of stealing, Emmanuel Okello Otieno, 18, was sentenced to prison without the chance of a fine by senior chief magistrate Monica Maroro of the Kibera law courts.
Otieno was accused of robbing Hassan Nuru Said on July 31 of a Samsung phone worth Sh23,000, a Bluetooth gadget worth Sh1,000, and a pair of shoes for Sh7,000, in violation of Sections 268 and 275 of the Penal Code.
Otieno visited Said at his home in the Makina neighborhood where they stayed till midnight before Said went to sleep and left Otieno to watch television, according to the testimony given in court.
Later, at about 3 a.m., Otieno departed the residence while carrying the aforementioned things.
On August 1, Said later encountered the prisoner in the Kibera slums’ Gatwekera neighborhood and arrested him with the assistance of bystanders.
He was led there by them, the Kibera police station. He was found to be in possession of the pair of shoes, which were then brought up in court as evidence.
Both the phone and the Bluetooth gadget were lost.
Otieno confirmed the allegations and denied selling the products, saying he needed the money for the bus fare to go to a funeral.
